Sitiawan Recreation Club

I captained my first Away match vs. Sitiawan. It was part of a interclub series, with tennis, darts, snooker, and badminton taking part... There wasn't enough interest from the other sections for the club to arrange a bus, so most of my planning and arranging before the match was seeing to the transportation. Most of us went in a 3 car convoy early saturday morning... After a good bah kut teh breakfast courtesy of Datin "Girl Power" we headed out, intending to have lunch in Pantai Remis, but we made such good time (and didn't get lost thanks to GPS) that we just had a coffee there and moved on to Sitiawan for lunch... The GPS took us thru the back way to the hotel, but did steer us directly to it...those gadgets are worth every penny...

We had a nice lunch of Ang Chiew Mee Swah (red wine & noodle soup) and other local goodies... had a short rest at the hotel and showed up at the club spot on time. We were pleased to see Sitiwan had just built a nice new club house (just opened 3 months ago) and we were among the first to visit, so their hospitality was great.

The tennis courts were across the street and were 2 clay courts and 2 hard courts... the clay courts were quite nice but the hard courts were in need of some resurfacing and the Sitiawan folks suggested we confine the official matches to the clay courts, which was fine by me...

Not all their players were there, so we started out of sequence..which meant the Loo Choo Teng and I wound up playing the first match... we had some difficulties adjusting to the timing of the clay surface, and one of the SRC guys was really whacking his forehand... luckily we squeezed out a 8-7 win... After that Chee and Khushpall lost by the same margin and Doug and Dr Alif also lost... Fortunately, our Bryant Thor came to help out, having finished snooker and partnered Soon Hong for another win. Our ladies Annette and Lisa also cruised to victory as did Robert and Koay...

Naidu had been grumbling about not being able to drink beer, since he was playing the last mixed doubles match... but since we had already won the necessary 4 matches, he was able to 'refresh' with beer during his changeovers.... it must have worked because he and Patsy also won, so the overall score was 5 - 2...

The SRC really let flow the beer... we had virtually all we could drink at the tennis courts..and then that night at dinner we had even more...delivered by crate!

Royal Kedah Club

Sidney brought down a nice team from Alor Setar's Royal Kedah Club.... Toshima (Toshi) was our captain of the day... it was a bit unusual because Friday's a holiday for the Kedah folks, so Toshi had to find some players who could show up at 3pm on a working day... but we had good support for the section and managed to field a good team... Most people were talking about the "Ms. Malaysia" among the visitors...but we tried to focus on our tennis and we managed to win 7-3.. A few players suffered a bit from the heat, but quickly re-hydrated with some good cold beers...Toshi did a good job both during and after the match with good food, good drinking and good singing during the dinner...He mentioned it was his "first time" as captain of the day for the tennis section... we look forward to more such days as this committee rotates the task of "captain of the day" amongst the committee..
